About Mappic

Pictures of places

Web community for photography interested travellers

Mappic is about maps and pictures. The site offers you to share your travel pictures in an exciting way. When you post your photo you simply connect it to a map so everybody can see where it is taken.

map If you want to share more than just your pictures, you can use Mappic to write and post travelogues. Your pictures can of course be included in the text.

The pictures and travelogues are available to everyone visiting the site. To find posted pictures you can choose either to use clickable maps (There are 253 of them), or browse the continent and country listings. Each red dot on a map indicates that there is at least one picture available.

On Mappic you will find photos taken by both amateur photographers and professionals. By sharing travel pictures we learn about different parts of the world. This site's goal is to be an inspiration for travelling, and a meeting place for travel photographers. Currently there are 1045 registered members from 131 different countries.

Joining Mappic is totally free. When registering you will get a Mappic Travel Homepage with the address: http://mappic.org/homepage.php?<Your_Nickname>

History

After returning from a holiday in Western Australia back in 2001, I (Vegard) wanted to put my travel pictures on the web. To make the site more interesting I come up with the idea of connecting them to maps. One thing led to another, and I started a spear time project to create a picture posting site.

A few months later (Springtime 2002) Mappic was released on the web. This first version was built using Java Servlets and JavaServer Pages (JSPs). After nearly one year I decided to port the entire web site to PHP (which gives more hosting alternatives).

Technical

For best viewing experience it is recommended that you use a web standard compliant browser like for instance Opera (my favorite) or Firefox. When using Internet Explorer 6 some pages may appear a bit odd due to fact that IE does not support CSS2 very well.

This site runs on Apache and is hosted by Jaguar Technologies. The pages is writted in PHP and to separate the content and logic, the Smarty Template Engine is used. All data is stored in a mySql database, which is abstracted using the ADOdb library.
