Why is the site called Mappic?

What makes Mappic stand apart from other picture posting sites is the connection between the picture (pic) and a map position. The name is reflecting this connection.

[1] If you are representing a business only looking for a way to promote your website, a Mappic membership is not for you. Mappic.org is not a channel of marketing.

What kind of pictures may I post?

First of all: In this context "picture" means photography.

Your picture will be connected to a map position, so it has to be related to a geographical place. If you choose to post a photo of flowers, animals, local people etc you should apply a description which explains the geographical connection. But please be diverse, and do not let one type of subject dominate your postings.

Photos where you and/or your travel companions make a large part of the picture are usually too private (and therefore off-topic). Also, they hardly ever have an obvious geographical connection. However, as a member you will also get a private folder with a capacity of 5 Megabytes (MB). This folder is meant for private pictures to be included on your homepage and in your travelogues.

Off-topic pictures will be removed. If you post a picture which do not comply with the posting policy, it will be removed by a moderator.

The file format of your picture has to be JPEG, and the size should not exceed 1000 x 1000 pixels. Please post only your own material. See the Mappic policies for more information on copyrights.

What purpose do my private folder have?

Your private folder may contain pictures of yourself and your travel companions, or pictures without a obvious geographical connection. You may include these photos on your Mappic Travel Homepage and in your travelogues.

The content of your private folder is only available from the photo albums and maps on your Mappic Travel Homepage, and from your travelogues where they might be inserted.

Your private folder has a capacity of 5 Megabytes (MB).

How do I post pictures?

Select Upload a picture from the menu to the left (Only visible after logon). Navigate the clickable maps until you find the right one. This is normally a country map, which means you have to click twice on the map before the right one appears. If your picture doesn't apply to a specific country, you may choose a higher-level map by using the button called "Use this map" below the map.

When you have got the right map, click on the position where your picture was taken. You are now taken to the upload form. Choose what file to upload and remember to give it a meaningful name. A description is also mandatory.

When you have filled in all the fields, click the Continue button. On the next page you will be asked to categorize your photo. Tick the applicable categories and hit the Finish button.

How many pictures may I post?

It depends on how large your photos are. If your JPEGs are close to uncompressed they consume more disk space. It is advisable to alter the compression factor of your images before uploading.

When your image folder size is reaching a certain level, a indicator will be visible on the My pictures page. When your folder is full, the upload function will be disabled.

Remember that Mappic is a free service. Keeping the server up and running cost money, and a posting limit is therefore necessary. Please think quality rather than quantity when you are posting.

What is a travelogue?

Extract from Wikipedia:

Travel literature is a record of the events, sights and personal feelings which a traveller experiences as they go from place to place. In some cases, it is the result of a prolonged stay in one city or area. An individual work is sometimes called a travelogue.

The format of these travelogues can be at its simplest a diary listing events day by day. More usually, travelogues are combined into a more coherent narrative resembling a story, and possibly even mixing fiction and reality. The style of individual travelogues varies as much as the reasons for travelling do. They can be just a simple description of what was seen, an investigation into the reason behind these new sights or even an investigation into the authors' own beliefs and motivations for travel. Why is ****** listed with a map and a flag? It is not an independent country.

When this site was built, the IANA's list of TLDs (Top Level Domains) were used as a basis. This list include several areas not recognized as indepentent states, some of them does not even have people living there on an ongoing basis.
